Harley Hammonds and Carter's Valley Crabgrass is for the most part, a family band. Dad Tim,
son, Harley, and daughter Amanda are joined in this dynamic group by bassist Eric Cordle,
and newest addition Joy Kindall. While the group does primarily Gospel Bluegrass, their talent
also reaches into traditional Bluegrass via instrumentals. The members of CVCG are not only
great musicians, but they are also composers, writing much of their own original songs and
arrangements.
The evening that we met to do an 'interview', we met at Tim Hammond's father's home. His
backyard served as a great stage, and I was treated to a personal concert, and was very
impressed with the talent and professionalism of the entire group. I sat talking to Mr.
Hammonds (Sr.) while the group tuned and prepared for their next song and he told me that he
used to go out to sales, looking at and buying various items. One day, he brought home a
mandolin in one of his finds, and young Harley picked it up when he got it home and started to
play chords. Now 13, Harley plays as an established musician of many years would, and has
remarkable, free-flowing talent on both guitar and mandolin. You MUST check out the YouTube
video of the family playing Old Joe Clark, and Harley showing off a special talent that even
those same established musicians might not attempt- playing the mandolin solo, behind his
head!
Amanda takes the lead on vocals for the group, and has a very strong, clear, pure sound. She
is also a natural talent on the mandolin. Father Tim joins her on vocals, and newest member
Joy Kindall compliments the duet on many of the band's songs, singing harmony. Joy plays
both mandolin and fiddle as well. Amanda and Harley just competed in the Netherland Inn
Fiddler's Convention and placed 2nd and 3rd overall in competition.
